A Datadog metric source lets Arklow read the timeseries you already use to understand service health and capacity.

Credentials

A Datadog credential is required. It contains an API key and an application key. The application key needs the timeseries_query scope. The source endpoint must match your Datadog site. US1 uses https://api.datadoghq.com; other sites use their own API domain.

Add Datadog to Arklow

1

Create the credential

Add a Datadog credential with the API and application keys for the site you will query.
2

Open the metrics page

Go to Metrics and click New metric source.
3

Pick the type

Set Source Type to Datadog and give the source a name.
4

Configure the site

Enter the Datadog API endpoint and select the credential. The endpoint and keys must belong to the same Datadog site.
5

Keep queries self-contained

Enter the complete metric name and scope in each query. You can leave Default Scope and Metric Namespace empty.
6

Save

Click Create metric source.

Add queries

Open the metric source’s Queries tab and click Add Query. Enter a complete Datadog timeseries query, including its aggregator and scope:
The query can return several series. Tags such as customer_id, service, or region keep those series distinct and make them available for matching with action tags.

Identity tag exclusions

Tags normally participate in series identity. Add volatile tags such as pod_name or host to Identity Tag Excludes when changing infrastructure should not create a new logical series for otherwise equivalent telemetry. Exclusions apply only to series identity; the Datadog query remains unchanged. Keep every tenant or partition tag needed to match action tags. A query begins informing an action after you attach it with a metric policy.
1

Open the action

Open the action definition and select its Metrics tab.
2

Attach metrics

Click Attach Metrics, or Add Policy when the action already has a policy. Select the Datadog source and query.
3

Choose a mode

Use Discover to consider the query’s returned series. Use Manual to limit consideration to series matching the selector you provide.
4

Align tag names

In Discover mode, add Tag Bindings when an action tag and Datadog tag carry the same identity under different names, such as customer and customer_id. Manual policies use the metric-side selector instead.
5

Create the policy

Set Max Series to a deliberate bound, then click Create Policy.
Manual selectors map tag names to accepted values:
